How to Compare Electrical Quotations in Bristol

Two electrical quotations can look very different because they include different work. Before choosing an electrician in Bristol, put the proposals side by side and check the scope, assumptions and exclusions. The total price is useful only when you understand what it buys.

Give each electrician the same brief

Use one room-by-room list or marked plan for all enquiries. Include the quantities and locations of fittings, any equipment you want supplied, the property type and access restrictions. Share changes with everyone quoting so you are comparing the same version of the project.

For a repair, describe the symptoms and ask how investigation will be charged. A diagnostic appointment may identify the work needed without including its eventual repair cost. Our hiring checklist includes a brief you can adapt.

Check these items in each proposal

  • Work included: rooms, circuits, quantities and any inspection or testing.
  • Products: the type, specification and finish of fittings, plus who supplies them.
  • Price basis: a defined job price, an estimate, hourly charges or an investigation fee.
  • Additional charges: call-out, parking, waste disposal and whether VAT is included or applicable.
  • Finishing: who lifts and reinstates flooring, patches walls and completes decoration.
  • Handover: relevant certificates, reports, instructions and any notification arrangements.
  • Timing: proposed availability, stages and dependencies on other trades or deliveries.
  • Payments: any deposit, stage payments and the work or materials each payment covers.

Clarify provisional items

Some costs depend on a survey, testing or access to concealed areas. Ask the contractor to identify these assumptions and explain how further work would be priced and authorised. An unexplained allowance makes it difficult to understand the likely total.

For example, two quotations for additional kitchen sockets may assume different cable routes or different work to the existing circuits. Ask each electrician to describe the proposed approach and the investigation needed before treating the prices as equivalent.

Consider suitability and communication

Check the contractor’s experience with the job and ask how practical issues will be handled. For an occupied home, disruption may matter as much as the proposed start date. For a shop or office, planned power interruptions and site access can affect whether a quotation fits the business.

A lower total may reflect a smaller scope or a different product choice. A higher total should still be explained. Ask questions about the differences and record the answers; neither price alone demonstrates the technical quality of the finished work.

Keep the accepted version

Once you decide, confirm the agreed scope and retain the quotation with its terms and any amendments. Check how long the quotation remains valid and who can approve later changes. This gives both parties a practical reference during the work.
