What we found on this job
Burnt wiring, a melted electrical fitting and extensive blackening around an electric heater — these photographs show a job we attended at Kebbi Electrical Services.
We’re sharing the damage we encountered to help homeowners and landlords recognise electrical warning signs and understand why a burnt socket, damaged connection or burning smell needs professional attention.
The photographs from our visit show:
- Severe damage to the electrical fitting beside the heater.
- Burnt cable insulation and exposed conductors.
- Melted and distorted plastic.
- Heavy blackening on the surrounding wall.

These images document the condition we encountered. The original cause requires inspection and testing; the appearance of the damage alone cannot confirm where the fault began.
What does a burning smell from a socket mean?
A burning or hot-plastic smell near a socket, switch or electrical connection can indicate overheating. Other warning signs include scorch marks, melted plastic, buzzing, crackling and repeated circuit-breaker trips. Electrical Safety First advises people not to ignore these signs.
One possible cause is a loose or deteriorated connection. Resistance at a poor connection can generate concentrated heat, while a loose connection may also produce electrical arcing. This explains one way damage can develop; it does not establish the cause of the incident pictured.
Overloaded extension leads and adaptors can also overheat. The number of available sockets does not tell you how much equipment can safely be connected.
What should you do if you notice burnt wiring or a damaged socket?
Smoke or fire? Get out, stay out, call 999.If there is smoke or fire in your home, leave if you can do so safely and call 999. Do not delay your escape to investigate the electrics.
Where there is no active fire:
- Stop using the affected equipment.
- Keep people away from damaged fittings and exposed wiring.
- Do not remove covers, touch damaged connections or attempt a repair.
- Arrange urgent attention from a qualified electrician.
- If you rent the property, also notify your landlord or managing agent promptly.

Why a new faceplate may not solve the problem
Visible damage is only part of the assessment. Before deciding on a repair, an electrician may need to examine the wiring behind the fitting, the connected equipment and the affected circuit.
Fitting a new accessory does not, by itself, establish that heat-damaged cables or other underlying faults have been addressed.
Our fault-finding service assesses the reported problem, identifies the work required and explains the findings. Repairs and testing depend on the condition of the installation and what the investigation reveals.
Does burnt wiring mean the property needs rewiring?
Not necessarily. The appropriate repair depends on the extent of the damage and the condition of the affected circuit. Some faults require a local repair; others need cable replacement or a wider investigation. The decision should follow inspection and testing rather than assumptions based on a photograph.
When should you consider an EICR?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR, assesses the condition of the fixed electrical installation. It records observed damage, deterioration and defects that could affect safety, within the agreed scope of the inspection.
An existing burning smell or damaged connection needs urgent attention. Once that problem has been made safe, an electrician can advise whether a wider inspection is appropriate.
