How to Compare Electrician Quotes in Bristol

Comparing electrician quotes in Bristol is easier when each contractor is pricing the same work. A lower total may leave out materials, testing, access work or making good. Use this checklist to understand what is included before choosing an electrician.

If you need a contractor rather than general advice, see Kebbi’s electrical services in Bristol for repairs, installations and inspections for homes, landlords and businesses.

Give each electrician the same job brief

Send your postcode, property type, a description of the work and clear photos where useful. Explain whether the property is occupied, whether parking or access is restricted and when you would like the work completed. For a renovation, share plans and the positions of sockets, lights and appliances.

Be specific about the result you want. Replacing an existing light fitting is a different job from adding new lighting points or tracing a fault. An electrician may need to visit before confirming the scope and price.

What should an electrician’s quotation include?

  • Scope: the rooms, circuits, fittings and tasks covered, with any exclusions written down.
  • Labour and materials: who supplies accessories, their specification and whether removal of old equipment is included.
  • Testing and paperwork: what checks and documentation are included for the proposed work.
  • Access and making good: responsibility for lifting floors, opening walls, plaster repairs, decoration and waste removal.
  • Total price: whether VAT, call-out charges, parking or other charges apply and are included.
  • Timing: expected start date, duration, access arrangements and any planned interruption to the power.
  • Changes and payment: how extra work will be agreed, when payment is due and how long the quotation remains valid.

Compare the scope before comparing the total

For a consumer unit replacement, ask what investigation and testing are included and how any existing faults would be handled. For rewiring, check the number of sockets and lights, accessory finishes, cable routes and making good. These differences can explain a price gap between two quotations.

An EICR inspection and the work needed to address its findings are separate scopes. Ask whether remedial work is excluded from the inspection price and how it would be quoted if required.

If you are comparing hourly charges with a fixed quotation, ask what each arrangement covers. A low hourly rate does not tell you the final cost if the time required and additional charges are unclear.

Check the contractor as well as the price

Check the electrician’s current registration, relevant insurance and experience of similar work. Read reviews for details about communication, reliability and how problems were handled. Ask about the workmanship warranty and its terms.

Agree changes before extra work begins

Existing installations can reveal faults or access difficulties during a job. Ask the contractor to explain any proposed extra work, its cost and its effect on the timetable before authorising it. Keep the agreed scope and changes in writing so both sides have a clear record.
